SULPHUR, La. (KPLC) - The Sulphur Fire Department is asking some Maplewood residents to evacuate their homes due to a gas leak in the area.
According to Calcasieu Emergency Director Jared Maze, a contractor hit a gas line that is believed to be leaking into the sewer system.
Residents in the circled area above are being asked to evacuate their homes, remain outside, and not start their vehicles.
According to Sulphur Fire Chief Rusty Naquin, gas from the ruptured line leaked into the sewage system, and sewage caught fire at a lift station.
Gas to the lift station has been shut off, and the fire is controlled and isolated, Naquin said. Fire crews are currently letting the fire burn out.
Officials will notify residents once the evacuation order is lifted.
