SHREVEPORT, La. - Election day is May 16, and early voting for the closed party primary and municipal primary gets underway on Saturday. Most items on the ballot will move forward despite a recent Supreme Court ruling.
The court ruled the congressional districts in Louisiana are unconstitutional. This decision stops the closed primary races for the U.S. House of Representatives.
State officials said the rest of the ballot remains unaffected. Those races and measures will proceed as scheduled.
The early voting period will run one week, through Saturday, May 9. Polls will be open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the exception of Sunday, when voting locations will be closed.
Voters do not need a specific reason to vote early in Louisiana. Participants can cast their ballots at their parish Registrar of Voters office or at other designated early voting sites. Click here to find your early voting location.
This election includes a variety of federal, state, and local races, as well as five proposed constitutional amendments.
Following the early voting period, the final deadline to request an absentee ballot is May 12 at 4:30 p.m. Election Day is Saturday, May 16, with polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
