Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby said shortly after 5:00 on Tuesday evening that he and others were responding to a possible drowning at a private lodge located just off of Highway 87 north of Burkeville. Burby said he and others were dispatched to the Srappin Valley Lodge when it was reported that the drowning had occurred there and a short time later he confirmed that someone had in fact drowned at the site. However, Burby has not released any information concerning the drowning or the identity of the deceased. Burby said the search for the victim would continue until late and resume on Wednesday morning. The Scrappin Valley Lodge was owned and operated for many years by the Temple-Inland Corporation. However, it was sold years ago to a group of businessmen from the Lufkin-Nacogdoches Area. There is a large lake on the property and also a fishing pier.
