A driver was lucky to escape injury despite striking a cow on a roadway in Newton County. According to Newton Fire Department Captain Melanie Smith, it happened at about io:3o Monday night on Highway 87 in the Pine Grove Community, about 4 miles south of Newton. Captain Smith said Noah Nova, of Newton, was driving a Ford pickup truck and he told firefighters that he saw a large dark object on the road, but before he had time to react, he struck the cow. The front driver-side of his truck sustained damage from the glancing blow.
