Newton Fire Department Captain Melanie Smith says a driver escaped injury despite crashing his pickup truck after hitting a deer. It happened at about 6:30 Monday morning on Highway 87 just south of Newton. Captain Smith says the driver, Cory Richardson, emerged from the overturned truck and told emergency responders what had happened. Smith also said emergency responders had to make their way through thick fog and low visibility to reach the scene.
