Driver rescued after vehicle goes off into ditch on 2nd Street

The driver of a late model sport utility vehicle had a close call on Thursday evening when the vehicle she was driving went off the roadway and into a drainage ditch. The volunteers of the Jasper Fire Department, along with police and other emergency crews were dispatched to the 400 block of 2nd Street, about a half block north of College Street, shortly before 10:00, when it was reported that incident had occurred and arrived to find the vehicle laying on the driver's side in a ditch full of water with the driver still trapped behind the wheel. Police and firemen on the scene immediately went to work trying to rescue the woman from the car an did so within a short time. The crash occurred during an electrical power outage in the neighborhood and linemen who were already there working to restore power said the vehicle was proceeding south when the driver apparently saw the work in progress tried to back, accidentally backing into the ditch.
