A driver was injured in an early Tuesday evening single-vehicle crash. It happened shortly before 6:00 in Newton on Highway 87, about a half-mile north of Highway 190. The man was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck when, for an unknown reason, he went off the highway and crashed into trees at the wood line. Newton Police Chief Will Jackson identified the driver as Dennis “D.J.” Cooper, Jr. Newton Fire Department Captain Melanie Smith said the truck had to first be pulled out of the trees before firefighters could get the man out of the vehicle. He was then taken by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital.
