The East End Fire Department says a driver was ejected and critically injured in an early Thursday morning rollover crash. It happened shortly after 2:00 on Highway 63, just east of Jasper. Firefighters say Jasper County Deputy Daniel Coons was first on scene and he found a 2004 Ford Ranger pickup truck upside-down off of the roadway, and the injured driver on the ground next to it. Firefighters said Deputy Coons applied tourniquets to the bleeding wounds on the very seriously injured man. The driver, identified as 20-year-old Nathan Self, of Burkeville, was rushed by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Shana Clark, Self was driving westbound when, for an unknown reason, the truck went off the highway, collided with a tree, and landed upside-down. *You may remember Deputy Daniel Coons was credited with saving the life of mail carrier Tamara Hartford as she was being attacked by vicious dogs in the Curtis Community on March 19th, 2024.
