CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - A hit-and-run suspect is at large after a Saturday night crash in Cherokee County left a motorcyclist dead.

Sgt. Chris Williamson with Texas DPS said the crash happened around 11:09 p.m. Saturday on CR 4701 just west of FM 856 N near New Summerfield. Williamson said a GMC pickup was traveling west on CR 4701 when it veered across the lanes and struck a motorcycle traveling east.

Cherokee County JP 1 Brenda Dominy said the motorcyclist has been identified as David Alan Pate, 57, of Troup. Pate was pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS is now leading the search for the suspect, who Dominy said abandoned the pickup at the scene and fled on foot.
