Authorities on Monday identified the man who was shot and killed during a standoff with officers near Kirbyville on Saturday as 36-year-old Charles McCauley. McCauley was pronounced dead at the scene by Jasper County Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mike Smith who has called for an autopsy as the investigation into the incident continues. The series of events reportedly began earlier in the day when officers received a report of McCauley's violent threats or behavior. However, officers say it was shortly after 6:00 pm when emergency dispatchers at the Jasper County Sheriff's Department reportedly received a call from a family member who stated that McCauley was threatening to harm himself and others at a home about a mile east of Kirbyville on Farm to Market Road 82. A sheriff's deputy was dispatched to the scene but an officer from the Kirbyville Police Department and a State Trooper were reported to be the first to arrive at the scene where they found McCauley who was said to be in an argument or altercation with a 14-year-old boy. The DPS says McCauley then pointed a gun at the officers prompting the trooper to draw his weapon and fire resulting in the death of McCauley. Since that time the incident has been under investigation by officers from the Texas Rangers Division of the DPS and the Jasper County Sheriff's Department and on Sunday the DPS announced that per policy and standard procedure, the trooper who fired the shot had been placed on administrative leaving pending completion of the investigation.
