Daisetta sinkhole has started growing again

A large sinkhole that opened up in the small Liberty County town of Daisetta in 2008 has suddenly started getting bigger. After remaining dormant with no changes and filling with water over the last 15 years, the anomaly has grown in size in recent days. Local officials say the sinkhole has swallowed a vacant building and several storage containers. After formation, the sinkhole was initially 26o feet deep and 9oo feet wide. However, Liberty County Assistant Fire Marshal Nat Holcomb has told Houston media that the hole is now about 410 feet deep and about 1,O5o feet wide. The U.S. Geological Survey says the sinkhole is where the old DeLoach Oil and Gas Waste Well was located, and it's over an ancient salt dome. Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Transportation is now keeping a close eye on Farm to Market Road 770, which sits just a few dozen feet east of the sinkhole, after a slight dip in the roadway has become noticeable.
