Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Fuel thefts have become a problem, and Crockett Police say they’ve caught one of those thieves. KTRE 9 News in Lufkin is reporting that a man accused of stealing over $1,100.00 worth of fuel was captured in Houston County. Police say 40-year-old Michael Perez Mendez, of Cleveland, had been using 31 gift cards which had been programmed with the credit or debit card information from 31 victims. When he was arrested, police say the truck he was driving had two 300 gallon tanks that he pumped the fuel into. According to Crockett Police, Mendez was already wanted in Angelina County on a charge of Fraudulent Use or Possession of Identifying Information, and he has now been charged with the same crime in Houston County, along with one count of Fraud, and two counts of Credit/Debit Card Abuse. At last word he remained in the Houston County Jail under a $60,000.00 bond.
