SHREVEPORT, La. - A second earthquake has been measured near where one took place Thursday morning.
The most recent one was a 2.6. It was about 2.5 miles south southeast of Uncertain, Texas, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.
The earthquake earlier this morning measured 3.3, also in the Uncertain, Texas area.
The KTBS 3 newsroom began receiving several calls and texts about 6:15 a.m., mostly from the Mooringsport, Oil City and Blanchard areas.
The quake lasted several seconds depending on the location.
Onv viewer, Angela Adams Robbins, shared a video from a camera in her house showing the moment when it happened. A slight vibration could be seen in the Christmas tree. The noise also caused the family's two dogs to react and start barking.
Two KTBS 3 technical directors even felt the jolt in the upstairs production room during the live broadcast. Max Honig and Zoe Hendrix said they've never felt anything like it before.
That area of Caddo Parish is prone to small earthquakes. In 2022, a 3.0 earthquake was also felt in the Blanchard area. Another 3.0 was reported in 2021 west of Blanchard.
Most induced earthquakes are not directly caused by hydraulic fracturing (fracking). The recent increase in earthquakes in the central United States is primarily caused by disposal of waste fluids that are a byproduct of oil production, according to the USGS website.
"Wastewater disposal wells typically operate for longer durations and inject much more fluid than is injected during the hydraulic fracturing process, making them more likely to induce earthquakes. In Oklahoma, which has the most induced earthquakes in the United States, 2% of earthquakes can be linked to hydraulic fracturing operations. Given the high rate of seismicity in Oklahoma, this means that there are still many earthquakes induced by hydraulic fracturing. The remaining earthquakes are induced by wastewater disposal. The largest earthquake known to be induced by hydraulic fracturing in the United States was a magnitude 4.0 earthquake that occurred in 2018 in Texas," the website states.
