Cherokee County inmate found dead of apparent suicide

JACKSONVILLE, Texas (KLTV) - Cherokee County Sheriff Brent Dickson reports that an inmate has died by suicide in the jail. Mason Johnston, 29, of Jacksonville, was found dead in the jail on Monday. Dickson said that lifesaving measures were attempted by jail staff, but were unsuccessful. The Texas Rangers and the Cherokee County Criminal Investigation Division have been called in to investigate, per sheriff’s office policy. Dickson said Johnston had been held in the county jail since July 30, 2021, on four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, continuous sexual assault of a child. and assault on a public servant. His remains have been sent to Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy.
