SHREVEPORT, La. - Thursday is Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator's last day on the job after more than 50 years in local law enforcement. He began his career in 1973 as a patrolman for the Shreveport Police Department. Sheriff Prator is being appointed by Gov. Jeff Landry to the Board of Pardons and by law, he can't hold both positions. He announced last June that he would not seek re-election in last fall's elections. He cited a medical episode as the reason not to seek another four-year term. Chief Criminal Deputy Jay Long will assume the sheriff's role until the outcome of the special March 23 election between sheriff candidates John Nickelson and Henry Whitehorn.
