SHREVEPORT, La. — Caddo Parish was the first in the area to put a burn ban in place on Tuesday. As the day progressed Wednesday, more parishes and counties were added to the list, and Thursday morning, Cass County in Texas issued a ban.
High winds and extremely low humidity get the blame for creating a significant risk of wildfires.
Approximately 500 acres have burned so far in Marion County, Texas. As of Thursday morning, the blaze was considered 75% contained as crews continued to build a containment line around the perimeter.
DeSoto Parish firefighters battled a wildfire in the Pelican community in the afternoon. Several roads were closed so that emergency vehicles could operate safely in the area.
The flames were contained before 5 p.m. However, the sheriff's office warns there's still heavy smoke around the burn site.
The DeSoto Parish Police Jury put a burn ban in place late Wednesday.
Several small fires have burned inside Shreveport, too, including one in a wooded area behind Calvary Baptist Church on Linwood Avenue.
