A Wiergate woman was lucky that her house was only damaged and not destroyed after firefighters say she was burning despite a burn ban being in place. According to Burkeville Fire Chief Charles Duckworth, it happened early Friday evening at a mobile home on County Road 1082. Firefighters arrived to find the fire quickly spreading out of control, and a side wall of the house melted. Duckworth said the woman, Rose Mays, received a citation from a Newton County Sheriff’s Department deputy. Duckworth summed it up by saying “Folks just don't want to listen.”
