The DPS says a driver disregarded a no-passing zone, leading to a multiple-vehicle collision with one death in Jasper County.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are investigating the fatal crash on State Highway 62, near County Road 784 south of Buna.
The preliminary crash investigation indicates that at about 4:45 a.m. Monday, the driver of a 2019 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling south, followed by a 2003 Chevrolet pickup, while a 2017 Nissan passenger car was traveling north.
It is reported that the driver of the Chevrolet disregarded a no-passing zone and began to pass the Dodge. As he was passing, the driver jerked the steering wheel back to the right and struck the Dodge when he observed the Nissan traveling toward him. This caused the Dodge to enter the west ditch and strike some trees. The Nissan traveled off the road to the right to avoid a head-on collision with the Chevrolet and struck a tree.
The driver of the Ram, identified as 43-year-old Dustin Spears, of Many, Louisiana, died at the scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 38-year-old Liborio Reyes of Jasper, and one adult passenger were not injured.
The driver of the Nissan, identified as a 38-year-old man from Kirbyville, was not injured.
This is an active and ongoing investigation, and no further information is available at this time.
The Jasper County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene.
