BENTON, La. -- A Bossier Parish man has died from injuries sustained on July 4 when an unhitched trailer hit him while he was mowing his yard. Troop G spokesman Trooper Eddie Thomas said Donald Ward, 66, of Benton died Sunday. The accident happened on state Highway 3 north of Kingston Road. Thomas said Ward was operating a zero-turn lawnmower in his yard as Mark Foy, 48, of Benton, was passing by. Foy was pulling an empty flatbed trailer. The trailer detached from his pickup truck, left the road and hit Ward. Troopers investigating the crash determined the trailer was not properly secured to Foy's truck. Ward was taken to the hospital, where he died. Foy was not injured. The crash is still under investigation and charges are pending, Thomas said. State law requires any load on a vehicle to be securely fastened to prevent the covering or contents from becoming loose, detached or become a hazard on the highway.
