A local man is undergoing treatment after he and the bicycle he was riding were struck by a vehicle early Tuesday afternoon.
Jasper Police and a crew from Acadian EMS responded to the 600 block of West Martin Luther King Boulevard and found the older man suffering from head and facial injuries after he was struck by an eastbound 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe.
Police later identified the bicyclist as 54-year-old Frank Lee Sears, and the driver of the SUV as 23-year-old Brannon Horn, both of Jasper.
Police Chief Gerald Hall said investigating officers filed a report stating that Sears had just left the nearby Sweetbriar Apartments and was traveling on the eastbound lane when Horn in the SUV crested a hill right behind him. Police said Horn did everything he could to avoid hitting Sears, but there was little he could do on the wet pavement.
Although Sears was conscious and standing up at the scene, police later said that his injuries were more severe than originally thought. After initially undergoing treatment at Jasper Memorial Hospital, he was later transferred to St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont in very critical condition.
