BEAUREGARD PARISH, La. (KPLC) - Fire departments in Southwest Louisiana are asking for prayers after a volunteer firefighter from Beauregard Parish died in the line of duty.

Around 3:35 this morning, firefighters Jonathan Ashworth and Tabitha Ashworth were driving from their home on Scallon Road to respond to a medical emergency call on La. 26, Beauregard Fire Protection District 4 Chief Eric Stracener confirmed.

Visibility was limited due to dense fog, and when they attempted to turn a 90-degree corner, they drove off the road, striking multiple trees, Stracener said. Jonathan died at the scene, and Tabitha suffered minor injuries.

Jonathan Ashworth had served as a firefighter/operator with Fire Protection District 4 since Nov. 14, 2018, Stracener said.

“He was the best person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was an asset to his community, his family, and this department. His smile and distinct voice will be missed,” Stracener said in a statement.

Several Southwest Louisiana fire departments offered prayers and condolences to Ashworth’s family.

The Houston River Fire Department said flags will be flown at half-staff and asks for prayers for Ashworth’s family, the fire department, and all responders.

Ward Six Fire Protection District 1 asked the community for prayers, saying in part, “Pray for comfort and peace during this horrific time for the family and friends.”

“Prayers to Beauregard Fire District 4 on the tragic loss of a member this morning. Prayers to his family as well during this difficult time,” the Vinton Volunteer Fire Department said on social media.

The DeRidder Fire Department also offered condolences, saying the following in a statement:

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a BPVFD4 firefighter who gave their life in the line of duty. To our neighbors, we stand with you, and we grieve with you. We honor this hero’s sacrifice and send our deepest prayers to their family, friends, and department.”

The crash is under investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop D.
