Do you know how many registered sex offenders are in your neighborhood?
It might seem like a weird question, but it’s one Beauregard Parish law enforcement is asking parents to be aware of this Halloween.
“There are some legal guidelines for regular sex offenders, things like they are not allowed participate in any Halloween activities,’ Sheriff Mark Herford said.
Herford is urging parents to be vigilant of registered sex offenders and for registered sex offenders to stay compliant with the law.
“Don’t have your porch lights on,” Herford said. “Don’t have your yard decorated for Halloween. Don’t do anything that could possibly lure young people into your yard.”
There are 126 registered sex offenders in Beauregard Parish. When heading out Halloween night, there’s a tool for parents to check which houses to avoid. All you’ll need is your smart phone.
“On the Beauregard Parish Sheriff website, there is a link to our sex offender registration,” Herford said. “You can go onto that website, put in your address, and then it gives you and then it gives you the option to extend milage wise to see the locations and identities of registered sex offenders.”
As added safety measure, Herford said deputies will patrol the streets, making sure those laws are followed.
“There are some laws that could be enforced with arrest even,” Herford said.
