The jasper County Sheriff's Department says an autopsy has been ordered after an elderly woman was found dead in her home near Evadale on Monday. Department spokeswoman Karli Cherry says deputies responded to the 79-year-old woman's residence in the 3oo block of County Road 873 after a concerned neighbor asked for officers to check her welfare. Cherry said deputies found her body in an advanced stage of decomposition. According to Cherry, the woman had no family in this area and she made little contact with the public. Currently, deputies are working to find next-of-kin to notify them about the death. Precinct 6 Justice of the Peace Steve Conner performed the inquest and ordered the autopsy. Jasper County Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan says it's important to make regular checks on elderly family members, friends, or neighbors. Duncan said "Please call us if you feel someone may be in need of assistance, or if something just doesn't seem right."
