Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard is warning people that an old familiar scam is hitting our area again. Scammers are calling people and claiming to be law enforcement, with the intention of stealing your money. The scammers will claim that you have a warrant, or you missed jury duty and you owe a fine, or other fictitious stories. They’ll try to get you to pay them, usually be telling you to go to a store and buy a certain type of money card, load it with money, and then give them the card information. Sheriff Havard says don’t fall for these scams. Havard said if you receive one of these calls, don’t give the person any of your information and just hang up on them. You can then report it to your local law enforcement agency. Havard stressed the following points that you should never pay money to someone claiming to be law-enforcement over the phone, and do not provide personal information to unknown callers claiming to be law-enforcement.
