Two people are now in custody and two others are still undergoing treatment at a hospital in Houston for the injuries they received in a shooting that occurred on Wednesday evening near Deweyville in the southmost end of Newton County.
Shortly after the incident occurred, Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard announced that a suspect, William Ronald Sepulvado had been arrested on two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second-degree felony, after investigators say two victims were shot while sitting inside a pickup truck.
On Thursday Sepulvado appeared before Newton County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Connie Smith, who officially arraigned him and set bond at a total of $100,000.
Later in the day, Havard announced that a second man, Russel Gene Fitts had been arrested in connection with the incident. According to Havard, evidence was presented to Newton County Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mike Greer, who signed a warrant charging Fitts with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
Havard said the warrant stemmed from the fact that witnesses gave statements that Fitts was in possession of a rifle at a location other than his residence when the shooting occurred.
Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Department and others responded at 7:13 p.m. on Wednesday to reports of a shooting near the intersection of County Roads 4213 and 4229 when it was reported that the incident had occurred.
Havard said Thursday that it was believed the incident resulted from a long-standing feud or dispute between the two men.
Havard said the investigation is continuing.
