Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

An ambulance was stolen in Lufkin and ended with a crash in Rusk on Thursday afternoon. City of Lufkin spokeswoman Jessica Pebsworth says the crime occurred at CHI St Luke’s Memorial Hospital. According to Pebsworth, a man was taken to the hospital by a family member for an unknown reason. Pebsworth said the man walked out of the hospital and got into a San Augustine EMS ambulance while the crew was in the hospital with a patient. Pebsworth said just a few minutes later Lufkin Police spotted the ambulance and tried to stop the man, but he led them, along with DPS troopers and Cherokee County deputies in a chase that went to Rusk and ended when he crashed the ambulance in front of a convenience store on Highway 69. Pebsworth said the man was injured in the wreck and is undergoing treatment. His name has not yet been released pending formal charges at arraignment.
