Accident at intersection of Highway 96 and RR-255 sends two people to the hospital

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Two people underwent hospital treatment following an auto accident that occurred shortly before 10:00 on Sunday morning at the intersection of Highway 96 and Recreational Road 255 in the north end of Jasper County.

A witness at the scene said the crash occurred as a late model Chevrolet Tahoe was headed south on Highway 96 and approaching the intersection of Recreational Road 255. He said a Ford F-150 pickup truck, which was traveling west on RR-255 for some unknown reason, pulled out onto Highway 96 in the path of the Chevrolet.

The Chevrolet struck the Ford on the passenger side of the vehicle sending it spinning around before leaving the road and coming to rest in a ditch southwest of the intersection.

The driver of the Ford was able to get out of the vehicle but the driver of the Chevrolet was rescued by the volunteers of the Lake Rayburn Fire Department who were almost immediately on scene and dealing with the situation.

Officers with the DPS said the driver of the Chevrolet, Shawna Bailey, 49, of Kirbyville along with the driver of the Ford, 54 year old Sandra Gill of Grand Prairie were both taken by ambulance to the hospital where they were treated for what was said to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred in busy traffic as many people were leaving Lake Rayburn after the 4th July weekend.

Ironically, the accident occurred less than 24 hours from the time of another accident at the same location on Saturday sending one person to the hospital.
