Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby says a man who was shot early Sunday morning has died at Jasper Memorial Hospital. According to Burby, the shooting happened shortly before 4:00 at the Elam Event Center on Highway 190, just west of Newton, near the site of the former Sawmill Town. Burby said the victim was pronounced dead at 4:54 am after being brought to the emergency room of the hospital. Burby says the investigation is continuing and the suspect has not yet been identified or arrested. The name of the of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
