A horse is undergoing treatment following accident on Saturday afternoon

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

There were no human injuries, but a horse was at last word still undergoing treatment for the severe injuries it received in a tragic auto accident on Highway 190 at the Jasper-Newton County Line on Saturday evening.

The volunteers of the Newton Fire Department along with other emergency personnel were dispatched to the location just east of the County Line shortly before 6:00, when it was reported the crash involving a pickup truck, which was pulling a horse trailer had occurred. However, shortly after their arrival at the scene, the firemen from Newton called for the volunteers of the East End Fire Department to come to the scene and assist with traffic control.

Witnesses at the scene said the crash occurred as the early model GMC truck was headed eastbound when the tongue and hitch separated from the trailer, allowing it to travel across the highway and into the woods on the north side of the highway.

The horse was rescued from the damaged trailer and treated by it's owner and friends who were at last word seeking a veterinarian.

State Troopers are investigating the accident.
