1 stabbed, shot fired at Shreve City Walmart

SHREVEPORT, La. -- A man was stabbed and a gunshot was fired inside the Shreve City Walmart Friday morning as two men fought on a food aisle, police said. One of the men is in custody. The other went to the hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening stab wound. No one was hit by the gunfire. A gun was recovered. "So, this is not a public safety issue at this time. This scene is what we would refer to as is a cold scene. So, we just want to dispel any rumors. There is no active shooter situation at Walmart.  And we really want to thank the citizens in the community. We had several great witnesses, several people on scene very quickly taking action and also the quick response of the Shreveport Fire Department as well," Shreveport police spokesman Cpl. Chris Bordelon said. Ray Koch Jr. was headed to the self-checkout when he noticed two men fighting in one of the food aisles. He overheard one cuss the other as they wrestled and knocked merchandise off the shelves.  But he ran for cover when he heard another customer say, "He's got a gun. He's got a gun. When she said that people were splitting." Koch ducked behind a stack of bakery goods as he heard one gunshot. “I was just praying for my health and safety,” Koch said. “I thought if this is the time, this is the time.”  The men continued to fight, knocking down more food and a large display of food and baked goods in a middle aisle. Koch then watched as one of the men ran out of the front door as a police officer arrived. The man was taken into custody, Koch said. Koch went back inside to talk to the police and watched as they found a single shell casing on the floor. “It’s just a scary experience when you’re that close away when someone does the gun thing," Koch said. Walmart employees gather outside in the parking lot after a gunshot was fired inside the store. Josue Austin also witnessed the fight. "A male approached me, maybe 33 years old. He asked me, 'Do I see what's behind me?' I look behind me. I said, 'No, there's nothing behind you.' And then he said he leaned into him, and he asked me, 'Are you black or white?' And I said, 'I'm Mexican.' He gave me this funny look and turned around. And before I knew it, we heard a gunshot right in front of the jewelry stand, right around the corner from the jewelry stand. And everybody was screaming, taking off,  running and hiding.  And that's all I know," Austin said.
