21 arrested in East Texas cockfighting bust

HUNT COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - Hunt County officials broke up a large cockfighting ring over the weekend.

According to the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began with a tip about a home in the 600 block of CR 1006. Deputies arrived at the scene Sunday afternoon, where they say a crowd of about 100 people were found at the home.

Most of the crowd fled once officials arrived, and the post says several dead chickens were found on the property, along with numerous live chickens. The sheriff’s office said it appeared chicken fights were actively being held at the scene.

The Criminal Investigations Division and the SPCA of Texas were called in to assist in the investigation. During the search warrant execution, the post says fighting pits, sharp blades called “gaffs,” and roosters were found. They say 65 live roosters and 10 dead roosters were taken from the scene.

A total of 21 people were arrested and booked into the Hunt County Jail on charges of cockfighting. Their identities were not released.
