TROUP, Texas (KLTV) - Troup ISD has announced that an 18-year-old student of the district’s high school was arrested for allegedly having a gun on campus.
According to the Troup ISD Police Department, they took the student into custody after an incident in the student parking lot. While patrolling the parking lot, a Troup PD officer saw a group of students between two vehicles. As the officer approached them, one student quickly moved a backpack into one of the vehicles in a manner that seemed evasive.
The officer spoke with the student about the backpack, and after further investigation and with assistance from the district’s police officer, a probable cause search was conducted on the vehicle. Officers said they found a gun and other related items inside it. The student was taken into custody without incident after the search.
The ISD police department says at no time was there any active threat to the students or staff of Troup ISD. Investigators said they have found no indication that the gun was ever brought inside any school, nor was any evidence found to suggest that it was intended to be used on campus.
Superintendent Tammy Jones said that Troup ISD police, in coordination with the Troup Police Department, will continue to investigate the incident.
