PALESTINE, Texas (KTRE) - Over 100,000 gallons of sewage began to pour from a Palestine wastewater facility Wednesday.
The city said the spill near Wells Creek, east of Loop 256, began around 10 p.m. Wednesday with an estimated total of over 100,000 gallons spilling as of 10 a.m. Thursday.
Heavy rains and flooding are believed to be the cause, according to the city, and crews are working to contain the issue.
The city said no drinking water systems were affected in the incident and the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality has been notified.
They recommend city residents in the area follow these guidelines:
- Avoid contact with any waste material, soil or water that may be affected near the area of the spill
- Bathe and wash clothes if you do come into contact with affected material
- Those with private drinking wells within 1/2 mile of the spill should boil their water before use until it can be tested and disinfected if needed.
