SHREVEPORT, La. -- A man is dead after being shot by police following an attempted carjacking in downtown Shreveport Sunday afternoon, police said.
It happened just before 2 p.m. in the area of Crockett, Marshall and Edwards streets.
No officers were injured.
Cpl. Chris Bordelon said the man was armed and tried to get into a person's car. That person was able to get away unharmed.
However, the gunman ran up Crocket toward Edwards when he was located by a police officer. The man was shot.
The shooting drew a heavy police presence. At one point, more than 20 Shreveport police officers and four or more state troopers were on the scene.
Officers put up crime scene tape around an expansive area.
SPD is investigating what led up to the attempted carjacking, while LSP has taken over investigation of the shooting involving the SPD officer.
This is the second officer-involved shooting in just over a week involving SPD. On May 7, SPD officers fatally shot a man who had just killed his brother-in-law during a family gathering on Yancey Place. The man went outside the house still armed with a gun and refused officers' commands to put it down.
