KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - A man has been arrested following a multi-vehicle crash the killed five and injured more on I-20 near Wills Point.
According to KDFW, Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, 27, was arrested for the crash after he told officials he fell asleep at the wheel while he was driving an 18-wheeler westbound on I-20 in Kaufman County.
According to Sgt. Kyle Bradford with the Texas Highway Patrol, traffic had slowed due to another wreck when Companioni crashed into a pickup truck carrying five people. This crash pushed his rig into two other semi-trucks, one of which jack-knifed and struck three nearby passenger vehicles.
One occupant of the pickup truck was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries while the other four passengers died at the scene along with the occupant of one of the other struck vehicles.
According to KDFW, two other people were also injured but are expected to recover. There is currently no word on the full number of people injured in this crash.
Companioni has been charged with five counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently booked into the Kaufman County Jail.
The identities of the other people involved in this crash have not yet been released.
