A motor vehicle accident was to blame for flickering lights and power outages that impacted thousands of AEP-SWEPCO customers, two spokespeople told KSLA News 12. The wreck occurred about 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at Youree Drive at Southfield Road in southeast Shreveport.
Shreveport police have confirmed that the wreck involved a stolen car. The driver lost control of the vehicle after only a couple blocks and the car struck a utility pole, a police spokesman said.
Further details about the accident are not readily available.
The wreck temporarily disrupted electrical service to about 7,000 customers in east, southeast and, to a much more limited extent, southwest Shreveport, an AEP-SWEPCO spokeswoman said. Some customers in south Bossier City also were impacted.
A spokesman for the utility said approximately 1,200 customers in east and southeast Shreveport, south Bossier City and Haughton experienced outages ranging from 1 to 20 minutes. About 35 customers in Shreveport’s Broadmoor neighborhood were without power for 40 minutes.
Service to all impacted areas was restored by 7 p.m. Saturday, the spokeswoman said.
