A woman was flown by medical helicopter Sunday morning after suffering a possible coral snake bite in northwest Jasper County. It happened shortly after 10:00 at a house in the 2000 block of County Road 23.
Angelina River First Responders along with Acadian EMS responded to the scene, while the Beech Grove Fire Department assisted with setting up a landing zone for the helicopter.
Beech Grove Fire Chief Jamie Gunter said the unidentified victim was an older woman who was bitten on her heel.
Gunter said no one was able to locate the snake, but the woman vehemently insisted that it had the red/yellow color pattern of a coral snake. Gunter also said that a paramedic told him that the woman was beginning to exhibit symptoms of such a bite.
Coral snake bites are very rare with less than one hundred occurring each year across the country.
