Kirbyville Police Chief Paul Brister said Tuesday that a female suspect was in jail following a bizarre incident that occurred there.
Brister said the woman was arrested after she allegedly broke out a window at the Kirbyville Police Station at the intersection of Highway 96 and Main Street shortly before 5:00 pm in an apparent fit of rage or anger.
According to Brister, the incident is believed to be the result of a dispute over child custody that officers had been involved in.
Brister said the suspect, who is a former paramedic, accused police of taking her children, when in fact they were taken by their father.
Brister said it began when a Kirbyville officer went to the Gateway Motel on Highway 96 to check the welfare of the woman’s children, who had been left with another woman who was staying in the motel.
Brister said the mother left the children with no food or other essential items, so the woman who was left to watch them called police, and the police then called the father of the children to pick them up, which he did.
However, Brister said the woman went into a rage and accused the police of having her children. The woman posted videos of herself on Facebook, one of which showed herself causing a scene outside of the Newton County Courthouse and Sheriff’s Department.
The name of the suspect has not been released, pending formal charges and arraignment.
