A Jasper woman was taken to the hospital following a single-vehicle accident Tuesday night on East Martin Luther King Drive after experiencing a medical emergency.
According to reports, Ida Simmons was leaving choir practice at Peaceful Rest Baptist Church when she began to feel ill while driving. Moments later, she lost control of her vehicle causing it to veer off course and overturn, leaving the car nearly upside down.
Witnesses at the scene acted quickly, pulling Simmons from the vehicle before emergency responders arrived.
The Jasper Police Department responded to the scene to assess the situation and secure the area. Emergency personnel transported Simmons to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Family members say Simmons is doing well and is expected to be released from the hospital.
The incident remains under review, but authorities believe a medical episode contributed to the crash.
