BENTON, La. -- Two people were killed and a third was injured in a UTV crash Saturday night in Benton, according to state police.

The crash claimed the lives of Bella Cassell, 10, and Callie Durbin, 31, both of Benton.

The preliminary investigation indicates Cassell was driving a 2012 Polaris Ranger utility terrain vehicle east on Merritt Road near Merry Lane. The UTV went off the road and overturned, ejecting all occupants, state police said in a news release Sunday.

Cassell and Durbin were unrestrained and not wearing DOT-approved helmets, troopers said.

Cassell was taken to a local hospital, where she died. Durbin, who was in the front passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A juvenile passenger, who was also in the front seat, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The juvenile also was unrestrained and not wearing a helmet, troopers said.
