Jasper County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan says wire thefts are continuing, and the latest occurred at a Jasper-Newton Electric Cooperative sub-station in the Holly Springs Community. Duncan said the “The thieves did a significant amount of damage, and we are working to identify them and put them in jail.” It’s the latest theft of wire as thieves target the wiring for copper, which is then sold to metal recycling shops, usually for drug money. The increase in wire thefts was noticed in mid-February, and Duncan said investigators have been working with local metal recycling shops in an effort to identify the suspects and to make arrests.
