WINN PARISH, La. (KNOE) - A Winn Parish deputy involved in a deadly shooting on June 20, 2025, will not face criminal charges, according to documents released by the Winn Parish District Attorney’s office.
An officer-involved shooting in the 500 block of St. John Street in Winnfield left Justin Curry dead. The district attorney’s office said that, based on the events leading up to Curry’s death, the deputy’s use of excessive force was justified.
Documents released by Winn Parish DA Chris Nevils show that deputies responded to reports of an armed man, identified as Curry, who barricaded himself inside a home once law enforcement arrived.
Nevils said deputies spent 1.5 hours negotiating with Curry to come out. During those 1.5 hours, Curry shot inside the room he was barricaded in at least 13 times.
Nevils added that, while barricaded, Curry said he wanted the deputies to kill him.
Deputies said Curry seemed like he was going to cooperate, but when he came out of the bedroom, he was armed with a gun.
Documents released by Nevils show that this is when a deputy shot Curry, “gravely wounding” him.
First responders took Curry to Winn Parish Medical Center, where he died on July 2.
WPSO turned the investigation over to the Louisiana State Police. LSP released their findings to Nevils on Sept. 22.
Nevils said based on LSP’s findings, the DA’s office cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the deputy’s use of excessive force was unjustified.
Curry was a former officer with the Winnfield Police Department.
Lawsuits filed in 2018 accused Curry of using excessive force against a Black woman. Curry was cleared of criminal charges.
Another lawsuit regarding the same case was filed in Oct. 2019. The case was dismissed in 2022.
