Updated-Two Dead and One Injured in Newton County Head-On Crash

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says two people are dead and one is injured following a head-on crash in north Newton County on Friday evening. It occurred at about 8:30 on Highway 87, about three miles north of Burkeville.

According to DPS Sergeant Shana Clark, a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck was southbound while a 1997 Ford pickup truck was northbound. Clark said the driver of the southbound Chevrolet crossed over the centerline and collided head-on with the northbound Ford.

Sergeant Clark said the driver of the Chevrolet, Joey Mcclelland, 33, of Newton, died at Jasper Memorial Hospital, while the passenger in the Ford, Terry Williams, 58, of Hemphill, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Clark said the driver of the Ford, David Tilley, 40, also of Hemphill, was flown from the scene to Kingwood Medical Center.

UPDATE - DPS originally identified Williams as the driver of the Ford and Tilley as the passenger in the Ford. However, on Sunday DPS issued the following correction to the original information: "CORRECTION: The driver of the Ford pickup, identified as 40-year-old David Tilley, was transported to Kingwood Medical Center for treatment. His passenger, identified as 58-year-old Terry Williams, was pronounced deceased on scene by a Justice of the Peace. There is no further information available at this time."
