UPDATED STORY

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department says one of their deputies was killed in a Tuesday morning crash. It happened at about 7:30 in San Augustine County at the intersection of Highways 147 and 103. According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Shana Clark, the deputy, who was driving a patrol unit, was traveling northbound on Highway 147 and failed to yield to a 2014 Peterbilt 18-wheeler, which was traveling westbound on Highway 103. Sergeant Clark said the deputy’s patrol unit struck the trailer of the big-rig. Law enforcement worked until late Tuesday afternoon to find next-of-kin. Once notification was made, he was identified as 25-year-old Matthew Pierson, of Etoile. The truck driver was identified as 54-year-old William Lyons, of San Augustine. He was not injured. The body of the deputy was transported with a law enforcement escort to Tyler where an autopsy was to be performed.
