Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby says a manhunt in underway near Burkeville.

According to Burby, deputies from his department responded to Sabine State Bank on Highway 63 in Burkeville on Monday morning when it was reported that a pair of men were trying to steal the ATM machine.

Sheriff Burby said the officer chased the men who were last seen jumping out of a vehicle on Farm to Market Road 692, near McGraw Creek, located northeast of Burkeville.

A short time later, Sheriff Burby said one of the suspects had been seen near the intersection of FM-692 and County Road 2123 apparently trying to flag down a vehicle or hitch a ride.

Shortly after 10:00, Burby said one man had been detained, and the other is believed to have stolen a pickup truck in that area. The stolen vehicle is described as a 2017 dark gray Ford F-150 pickup truck with Louisiana license plate C549061.

Sheriff Burby is asking all people in that area to be on the lookout for the two suspects who have only been described as white males and he is also asking everyone to lock the doors of their homes and vehicles.

Anyone seeing anyone or anything suspicious is asked to call the Newton County Sheriff's Department immediately.

Burby said shortly before 10:00 that he and others were questioning an individual, which they believe is one of the suspects in the case. He also said that a resident of the area had reported a truck stolen and that he and others believe the suspect which was wearing a teal shirt is now driving the truck.
