UPDATED - Man died after being struck by vehicle at Walmart, driver arrested

A man has died after being hit by a vehicle at the front door of the Walmart Store here in Jasper, and the driver of the vehicle has been arrested. Police and emergency crews were dispatched to the location shortly after noon on Sunday when it was reported that the accident had occurred. Jasper Police say Frank Wegner, So, of Brookeland, was in the crosswalk at the entrance to the store when he was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Charles Erderly, 79, of Call. Wegner, who was trapped under the vehicle until police and other bystanders used a jack to free him, was pronounced dead at the scene by Jasper County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Raymond Hopson. Following an investigation of the incident, police arrested Erderly, who was charged with Criminally Negligent Homicide. Bond on Erderly was set at $7,500 and he was released on Monday morning after making arrangements to post bail. Captain Mike Poindexter said samples of blood were taken from Erderly at Jasper Memorial Hospital and officers were waiting on the results of toxicology tests as the investigation into the incident continues. KJAS News has learned that Erderly was involved in another major accident which occurred in July of 2018 involving his Chevrolet Tahoe SUV and a motorcycle. It happened on Highway 96 at the entrance to Gateway Tabernacle Church, just south of Kirbyville. A Texas Department of Public Safety report said that Erderly, who was 74 at the time, was leaving the church parking lot when he pulled out in front of a 2013 Harley Davidson Motorcycle, being operated by Bradley Arnold, 24, of Kirbyville. The report said that the motorcycle hit the SUV, and then slid for about iso feet. Arnold was flown from the scene by medical helicopter to St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for treatment of very serious injuries.
