Jasper Police Chief Gerald Hall says a man and woman are in custody and a patrol SUV has very minor damage following a late Monday afternoon vehicle pursuit that turned into a foot chase. It began shortly before 4:00 at Stellar Bank on South Wheeler Street when an employee there reported someone in a maroon Nissan SUV in the drive-thru was trying to cash a stolen check.
When police arrived, the driver fled from officers and then stopped next to the Jasper Public Library on Water Street. Police said the male driver fled on foot, while the female passenger was placed into custody by an officer at the SUV.
Officers said that after stopping, the SUV rolled backwards and hit the front of the police vehicle, resulting in very minor damage.
Meanwhile, an officer captured the fleeing suspect a short distance away.
More information is expected to be released on Tuesday.
