Tree falls on power line sparking fire behind The Event Center

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

In recent days local firemen have been asking people in the area to not burn if possible, stating that most fires during this period of high fire danger have began as controlled burns that got out of control. However, that was not the story on Wednesday morning when fire broke out west of Jasper. Firefighters from the Beech Grove, East End and Jasper Fire Departments along with the Texas Forest Service were dispatched to the Event Center on Highway 190 about four miles west of Jasper, when it was reported that a large grass and woods fire was burning behind the facility. Firemen arrived at the scene to find that the blaze began when a dead tree fell on a power line, causing sparks to fall on the dry negation below. Firemen battled the blaze for some time before finally bringing under control. No damage resulted to the event center and there were no injuries reported.
