The Overton Mustangs scored on all four offensive possessions in the second half, to prevail 49-20 over the West Sabine Tigers last Thursday night in the 2A Division 2 Bi-District playoffs in Joaquin at Rams Stadium. They capitalized on a perfectly bounced onside kick with 1:34 to play in the third quarter, to open up a 42-20 lead with 11:09 to play in the game. Prior to the kick, the Mustangs scored on two plays to stretch its lead to 35-20 with 96 seconds left in the third frame.
Overton led 22-14 at the half over West Sabine, who finished the season with an 8-3 mark after being the undefeated champions of District 12-2A with a 5-0 record.
West Sabine jumped ahead of the visitors on the scoreboard with an impressive 5-play, 63-yard drive in the opening series, capped off by Jakobe Harris' 11-yard touchdown run with 9:25 left. Harris' PAT kick sailed wide, and the Tigers led 6-0.
Overton responded with a 60-yard touchdown run at 7:17, and the PAT gave them a 7-6 edge. They went 74 yards in six plays.
West Sabine failed to earn a first down on their second possession, and punted to the Mustangs.
The Mustangs then upped their lead to 14-6 with another TD run at 3:34 in the first quarter, on five plays from 45 yards out.
West Sabine's Cade Myrann burst through the Mustangs defense from 10 yards out at 11:13 in the second period, and then scored on the conversion run to knot the score at 14-14. The Tigers 8-play scoring drive lasted over three minutes and 77 yards.
Overton followed with another scoring drive to take the lead again 22-14, on 12-plays and 88 yards with 4:34 left before intermission.
West Sabine had only three offensive possessions in the first half (28 plays), while the Mustangs were successful in three-of-four series (26 plays).
Despite trailing on the scoreboard in the first half, the running back duo of "4/44" Harris and Myrann, combined for 153 yards on 21 rushing attempts.
Myrann cracked the 100-yard mark with 101 on 12 carries, while Harris accounted for 52 yards on nine attempts.
West Sabine's final scoring drive occurred in the third period on 12 plays, and 70 yards on Harris' 2-yard run with 2:33 left in the quarter. The drive was highlighted by Myrann's 10 yard run to the 19-yard line, on a 4th and 5 from the 29-yard line. Myrann then gained six yards (ball on the 2-yard line) one play later, but suffered an injury that sidelined him the rest of the contest at the 3:28 mark.
The Mustangs scored on all four second half possessions and seven out of eight during the game.
West Sabine ran 52 offensive plays and Overton totaled 47.
Overall rushing, Harris closed out his high school finale with 146 yards on 20 carries, and Myrann finished with 15 rushes for 117 yards. Laken Quick added 26 yards on three attempts. The Tigers final numbers were: 289 rushing yards on 38 attempts (7.6 yards per rush) and Quick had 42 passing yards (27 yards were to Harris on two passes) which gave West Sabine 331 total yards in the game.
Defensively, Connor Dyess and Cayson McBride both had six tackles each. Harris, Johntorian Randle, Caden Duffey, and Hunter Primrose all had five tackles.
Clayton Taylor, Zae White, and Ethan Powell all registered four each. LaMare Williams and Mason Hart had two each. Cudder Fuller had one stop.
