LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - A Texas man and a Sulphur woman will spend several years behind bars in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed an innocent woman in her home.
Annette Touvell, 65, was shot in the head while watching TV on March 2, 2024. Deputies said the shooters had been driving down Sailfish Drive, near the intersection of Tank Farm and Elliott, south of Lake Charles, and shooting at random houses.
Tyler Deshawn Lewis, of Bridge City, pleaded guilty as charged to negligent homicide and obstruction of justice.
Lewis was originally charged with second-degree murder, but the bill was amended in December 2024, according to the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office.
On Oct. 14, 2025, Lewis was sentenced to five years and 20 years in prison on the negligent homicide and obstruction charges, respectively. Both sentences will run concurrently.
Also sentenced was Chelsea Rae Hyatt of Sulphur. She pleaded guilty as charged to obstruction of justice, the DA’s office confirmed.
On Oct. 14, Hyatt was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Several others were arrested in connection with the shooting. In May, Jordan Lee Jones, 19, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for manslaughter. He was originally charged with second-degree murder, but the charge was amended.
At least two underage teens, including Hyatt’s daughter, were also arrested in connection with the killing.
Investigators said they believed the shooting was random and the victim had no ties to the shooters.
